Your boat is a source of pride and fun. Of course, you want to spend as much time on the water as possible. The more often your boat is out, and the more friends you invite along, the more chance that you can end up with a tear in your upholstery.
The most common puncture to a boat seat cushion is from car keys in a pocket when someone sits down. (So ask your guests to put car keys or other sharp accessories elsewhere.)
Accidents like this aside, marine upholstery is constantly being bombarded with elements: salt, sunshine, and changes in temperature can all impact longevity and appearance. Over time, your upholstery becomes more susceptible to tears. So even the most careful captains may end up a torn seat cover.
What do you do when that happens?
Surprisingly, the simple, temporary fix is just ordinary hardware store Duct tape. This will protect the integrity of your cushion and hopefully forestall further damage, but you will want to seek professional help as quickly as possible. There are patches that can be used, but in most cases replacing the vinyl is the best option.
